CURRENTS OF SABLE

· New York Concert Review said of
South Korean pianist Eunmi Ko, "...
her strengths are an abundance of
technique, as well as a beautiful array
of pianistic colors..."
· Eunmi Ko enjoys a busy career,
appearing in concert at Carnegie
Hall, the Chautauqua Music Festival,
Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival, and
many more, holding master classes
at Eastern Michigan University, the
University of Tampa, University of
Tennessee, Ying Wa College in Hong
Kong, and others.
· Ko has been praised for her original
programming. For this release she
has chosen an array of works, both
old and new.
· Little is known about the life of
German violinist and composer
Johann Jakob Walther. It is said that
he was a violinist in the orchestra
of Cosimo III from 1670 to 1674, and
afterwards was concertmaster at the
court of Dresden.
· Forty of Walther's compositions are
extant, and are contained in two
volumes: Scherzi da Violino solo con
il basso continuo, published in 1676,
and Hortulus chelicus, published in
1688.
· This release features his Hortulus
Chelicus, which scholars believe was
composed between 1650 and 1688.
In this collection, Walther wrote at a
new, higher technical playing level for
the violin.
· This intriguing album is filled with
compositions written "for chamber
ensembles with news broadcasts
transformed."
· The works on this release are from
composer David Evan Jones. Jones
has written for chamber opera,
chamber music, computer music,
and contemporary music theory. He
frequently focuses his work around
the structural relationships between
phonetics and music.
· All of the works on this release
were composed within the last
six years, and each has a unique
instrumentation, even utilizing world
instruments like the Korean flute and
the Korean zither.
· Scott Macmillan's love for creating
music has inspired him to explore
genres in his compositions, including
rock, blues, classical, Celtic, jazz, and
avant-garde. His most celebrated
composition to date, Celtic Mass for
the Sea, won him a Portia White Prize
Nova Scotia's most prestigious artist
award.
· Jill MacLean's poem Sable Island 44N
60W is the inspiration for the work
featured on this release, Currents of
Sable Island. The evocative opening
stanza of the poem sets the mood-
"the island bends to current, winds
and wave, maarram grass netting the
dunes, which bury and disinter seal
rib, sparrow rib, rib of feral horse, arc
of a dolphin's spine, sand where the
heart was..."
