COMPLETE PIANO MUSIC,
VOL. 2
ˇ This release includes one of Joachim
Raff's major chamber works, the
sonata for Cello and Piano of 1973, in
its first recording.
ˇ
All the pieces here underline the
importance of melody in Raff's music.
This anthology is a treasure trove
of lovely tunes, which Raff can spin
with Schumannesque urgency and
Schubertian charm.
ˇ Anatol Vieru's sixth symphony,
Exodus, arose in a period of downfall
and decline, just before the collapse
of the regime associated with
the name of the dictator Nicolae
Ceausescu. It was composed between
1988 and 1989 and is influenced by
the atmosphere of that era. The more
Vieru caught himself worrying, the
more obvious it became to him that
an exodus was taking place around
him.
ˇ
In his music, Vieru abandons the
familiar stance of symphonic
writing, in which a multiplicity of
instrumental aprts are combined
into a unified gesture, in favor of a
simultaneity of contradictions.
ˇ Nicola Fago (1677-1745) was one
of the leading practitioners of the
chamber cantata, a kind of mini-
opera for voice and ensemble. This
genre, brought to perfection by
several generations of composers
working in the aristocratic courts in
Naples, has only recently attracted
the attention of musicologists.
ˇ
The six examples by Fago recorded
here, for the first time, reveal him
to have been a master of the genre:
they are dramatic, full of rhythmic
excitement and stuff with catchy
tunes.
ˇ The Lithuanian pianist and composer
Vytautas Bacevicius (1905-1970) is
one of the undiscovered pioneers of
the twentieth century.
ˇ
This second volume of his piano
music presents works written
between 1927 and 1966, most of them
receiving their first recording here.
This release shows the evolution of
his musical language from the post-
Scriabin style of the early works.
ˇ
This release takes its place in the
extensive - and still growing -
representation of Lithuanian music
on Toccata Classics.
