UWE DIERKSEN
BLUE ROCK THRUSH
· Founded in 1986, the Swedish
saxophone quartet Rollin' Phones has
long been a staple in the Swedish music
scene. Their versatile repertoire has been
a role model for classical saxophonists
world wide.
·
For their thirtieth anniversary, this
album takes a retrospective look on the
ensemble's career, featuring works by
Antonio Carlos Jobim, George Gershwin,
Gerald Marks, Irving Berlin, Thelonious
Monk, and more.
·
Several folk tunes are also included,
showing the ensemble's Swedish roots.
Mikael Raberg worked closely with the
ensemble throughout the making of this
album. Raberg has been one of Sweden's
most prominent big band composers
and arrangers since the 1980s.
· This new release from Owe Dierksen is
centered around the blue rock thrush, a
bird which is common in Eastern Asia.
Inspiration is drawn from the trail of
ornithologists, Franciscan priests, and
the composer Olivier Messiaen.
·
Trombonist and composer Uwe Dierksen
performs in a variety of genres, which is
partially why this album can't be pinned
down to just one. Elements of pop, rock,
and jazz are infused into each of these
15 original compositions.
·
Dierksen has been performing with
Ensemble Modern since 1983, an
ensemble which specializes in
contemporary music. He has had
numerous works written for, and
premiered by him, and he has almost
two dozen recordings to his name.
