· Composer Maxwell Davies was closely associated with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from the 1980s until his passing in 2016. With this new release, the ensemble
celebrates the life of their beloved Composer Laureate.
·
Maxwell Davies produced an incredible amount of music during his career. In 2014, a BBC Prom was devoted completely to his works. The cornerstone of this album is An
Orkney Wedding, which portrays the beauty of a sunrise after a boozy celebration.
·
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is well-known and respected all over the world. They are conducted here by Ben Gernon, who conducted the ensemble in the 2014
Davies devoted BBC Proms.
·
"This music was fun, the playing of the musicians superb, and it left the audience in an excited and bedazzled celebratory mood." (BachTrack)

LENNOX BERKELEY
STABAT MATER
· Apollo e Dafne, composed by George
Frideric Handel in 1709, is a secular
cantata, and one of Handel's most
ambitious cantatas. The success of
this work was indicative of Handel's
outstanding operatic career which
would soon follow its release.
·
Vocal soloists Mhairi Lawson, soprano,
and Callum Thorpe, bass, join the
ensemble for the cantata. This release
also includes two recital pieces for
wind band, which shows Ensemble
Marsyas' instrumentalists' great
talent.
· Lennox Berkeley once addressed the
issue of composing sacred works
in a 1966 issue of Times Literary
Supplement: "How, it may be asked,
does a composer approach the task
of writing religious music? Does
he adopt a different tone of voice,
or use a special idiom?... I cannot
imagine that any composer in these
circumstances would want to modify
his ordinary musical idiom."
·
True to his remarks, Berkeley's Stabat
Mater, Magnificat, and "Better My
Heart" show his distinctive voice and
recognizable style. The sincerity of
these works is palpable and secures
them a place amongst the great
sacred works of his day.
