· Oboe virtuoso Emily Pailthorpe, with
her new release, brings tougher some
of the most well-known concertos
for oboe as well as a new work by
Richard Blackford, after which the
album takes its name.
· Richard Blackford's "The Better Angels
of Our Nature" was commissioned
by Emily Pailthorpe in 2012. The title
comes from Abraham Lincoln's first
inaugural address in 1861.
· Emily Pailthorpe's unique sound
and compelling musicianship has
garnered her a large following
amongst fellow musicians and
concertgoers alike. She was the
youngest artist ever to the prestigious
Fernand Gillet International Oboe
Competition.
· Fenella Humphreys is equally as
motivated as she is talented. Inspired
by the solo violin music of J. S. Bach,
she mixes in some of Britain's finest
composing talents of today and the
result is this new release, Bach 2 the
Future.
· Fenella had long been performing
Bach's solo violin music, but was
frustrated with the lack of modern
unaccompanied violin works. After a
remarkable fundraising drive, Fenella
was able to commission the works
that appear on this release from
Adrian Sutton, Peter Maxwell Davies,
and Sally Beamish.
· King College's previous Requiem
recording, that of Faure's Requiem,
was the best selling classical album
of 2014, and was praised by Choir
& Organ Magazine, Gramophone,
The Times, and International Record
Review.
· This new recording features
another great French Requiem-
Maurice Durufle's 1947 work, in the
composer's original version. The
release also includes Durufle's Four
Motets and his Messe Cum Jubilo.
· This recording is the last time the
famous organ at King's was played
before it was removed for extensive
restoration. The current form of the
instrument dates from the early 20th
century, but parts of the instrument
date back to the early 1600s.
· This record is a fantastic find as it
includes the world premiere recording
of an incredible major work for piano
and orchestra by Franz Liszt, his Grande
Fantaisie Symphonique.
· This piece has long been unknown to
performers and recording artists alike, as it
remained unpublished until 1981.
· This recording was made possible through
generous support from The East-West
Cultural Exchange, The Garber Foundation
USA, and The Shevchenko Association.
· This recording was made in 1990 and
features the late Ukrainian pianist Daria
Telizyn. "Telizyn made the piano sing, even
in powerful tone clusters, but especially in
more gentle, single-line melodies, soulful
and zealous." (Albany Times Union)
